Illinois Battery Rebate Status
Short version: if you're on ComEd, you can get $300 per kWh today for a home battery paired with solar. A $300 per kWh rebate for batteries without solar is only proposed. ComEd filed proposed rules on September 4, 2026, asking to start October 19, and under that proposal, applications for batteries without solar open no earlier than January 1, 2027. It is not approved yet. Naperville Electric customers can't use ComEd rebates, and Ameren has not published its plan.

What changed
On September 4, 2026, ComEd filed a proposed Rider DG Rebate with the Illinois Commerce Commission. The document is marked "advance copy" and asks for an October 19, 2026 start. It proposes $300 per kWh for stand-alone home batteries (no solar) for 2027 through 2029, and says ComEd won't accept stand-alone applications until January 1, 2027. None of it is final until the ICC approves it.

Check your utility first
These are ComEd rebates. In Naperville, the city runs its own utility (Naperville Electric), so ComEd's battery rebates don't apply. Bolingbrook and Plainfield are ComEd. Ameren has not published its details yet. We check what your utility offers during the assessment.

The former homeowner Section 25D credit is not available for a new 2026 purchase, whether the battery is installed alone or with solar.
Common questions
Can I install a battery now and get the rebate later?
Maybe. ComEd's proposal covers stand-alone batteries connected on or after June 1, 2026, so a battery you put in now could qualify if the ICC approves it as filed. It is not approved, and the final rules could change, so nobody can promise you'll get it. If you install now, keep your invoice and your interconnection paperwork.
How much is the rebate for a battery paired with solar?
ComEd pays $300 per kWh today for a home battery paired with solar, so a 13.5 kWh battery earns $4,050. You need a smart inverter, a time-of-day or hourly rate plan, and enrollment in ComEd's Scheduled Dispatch program. This is for ComEd customers only.
When can I apply for a rebate on a battery without solar?
Under ComEd's proposal, no earlier than January 1, 2027. ComEd filed proposed rules on September 4, 2026, asking to start October 19. It is not approved yet, so that date could move.
I live in Naperville. Do ComEd battery rebates apply to me?
No. The City of Naperville runs its own electric utility, Naperville Electric, so ComEd's battery rebates don't apply there. Bolingbrook and Plainfield are ComEd, so they do. We check what your utility offers during the assessment.
