Window and Siding Permits in Naperville, Bolingbrook and Plainfield

The city's permit guide lists window replacement that changes the size or style, and any new opening, as permit work. It does not say a same-size swap is exempt, so confirm your exact scope with Naperville Building Permits before work starts.

The city says common vinyl, aluminum and cement-board siding on a single-family home generally does not need a building permit. Brick, thin-set masonry and stone veneer do. If we find rotted sheathing or structural damage once the old siding comes off, that repair is a separate question.

In the historic district, an in-kind replacement of wood or aluminum-clad wood windows that keeps the same openings and pane divisions can get administrative review, which takes about five business days. A change in opening, style or material goes to the Historic Preservation Commission. For siding, replacing 50% or more on a primary facade is reviewed differently from smaller in-kind work, and fiber cement with a matching reveal is recognized in some wood-replacement cases. The village has a siding permit. Its instruction sheet (dated September 2022) lists a $50 fee, a final inspection, and signatures from both the homeowner and the contractor. It also says the homeowner must check with their HOA. Reconfirm the fee when you apply.
